Which genres survive a five-minute break
Mobile play happens in stolen minutes. That's just the reality of the format, and it means some genres shine on a phone while others struggle to fit.
Puzzlers and arcade racers are the obvious winners. You can open one, do a level or a lap, and close it without losing the thread. Games like a quick grid puzzler thrive here because a session has natural stopping points built in.
RPGs and strategy games are trickier. They can absolutely work on mobile, but the good ones design around interruption — auto-save everywhere, resumable battles, clear reminders of what you were doing. The bad ones assume you'll sit for an hour, and you rarely will.
My rule of thumb when picking a mobile game: can I stop cleanly at any moment? If yes, it'll survive my commute. If stopping means losing progress, it'll end up uninstalled by Friday.
